As we wrap up 2023 and prepare for the birth of another year, I want to share a practice my kids have brought to our birthday celebrations. This is a thoughtful reflective practice (if you’re alone) and also fun to share in groups—so maybe the New Year is a good time for this or maybe you want to save it for your own birthday celebration.
Here’s how it goes: the birthday celebrant (or New Year celebrant) is asked to share one highlight from the year in each of five categories (ordered so they can be remembered, and to reflect the sweetness of the season, SPICE). Feel free to interpret each category in a way that makes the most sense to you!
· Spiritual
· Physical
· Intellectual
· Career
· Emotional
It is always helpful to take a pause for reflection and celebration. If all five categories feel like too much, focus on the top three. Pause! Reflect! Celebrate!
As you consider this year’s SPICE(y) highlights, this might also lay the foundation for intention-setting in the coming year.
