What Are You Becoming?

Updated: Dec 2, 2021

One of my clients recently made the observation, “We are always becoming something.”

Clients come to coaching with problems they want to solve (e.g. how do I succeed in my new role? How can I grow my business? Can I leave this job that no longer brings me joy?). Solving problems is an important outcome of coaching, however, recent research (e.g. Boyatzis and others) suggests that transformational or lasting change depends on focusing on our vision of who we are becoming. Having a vision for ourselves connects to our deepest values and provides context for the changes that we want to make in our lives. Without the context of a vision, pursuing self-improvement is a slog and highly likely to fail.

Working with a coach helps clients:

  • Create a compelling vision that defines their reason for being, creating a foundation for change

  • Deepen and connect to values

  • Shine a spotlight on inner conflict, loosening its grip on behavior

  • Develop a plan and take action to create change

We are always becoming something. Who do you want to become?
